Last Entry - Storm Nigh Upon Me
30 july 2016
jp melville

It is end of day, darkness settled around me.
I see nothing forthcoming, blinded by hope.
The storm nigh upon me
I sense nothing, blinded by hope.

Looking back just eight days
From my words written down
I see where abandonment came from
Nothing at all about you
Me blind to the storm about to rise.

Because in those last waning days, I asked…

How sultry can we be
With tufts of white cloud
Riding on a backwash of azure blue
High above all the world’s heads?

I saw…

Gentle, warm, sometimes cool, soft caressing breeze over skin
In the trees shushshushpering through the leaves
To my right, off the porch
Facing south bluegrass stands chest height, stiff, tall, slender
Against the sun dappled background of gentle pine and stately oak.

I heard…

With time near evening, slightly past the beginning of sun’s descent
Up comes the wind from the now cooling day
The leaves across the horizon dance, stop still
Wave their million hands in unison to left to right to centre
Breath a moment… ahhh…
From leopard frog green to yellow paten
To stillness
To voice
When I listen in the trees shushshushpering and hear what touches us all the grace of God.

I wondered…

In ecstacy
How many shades of green can be?
How many whispers can be scored?
How many dances of leaves choreographed?
A blessing that I am here
That I am awash in love
My eyes, my skin, my soul
Caressed by ineffable splendour.

So I am sorry that I did not see
Selfishly
The storm nigh upon me
Your loneliness inevitably lashing lost in the storm of your temporal sea.
